Figuring out where to stay in Seoul is one of the most important decisions you’ll make before your trip.

The city is massive, and each area has a completely different feel.

After living about two hours from Seoul and staying overnight in the city more times than I can count, I learned how much your base can shape your trip.

Here are six of the best areas to stay in Seoul, plus where to book in each.

Quick Overview:

  • Myeongdong – Best Overall Area for a Central Base
  • Hongdae – Seoul’s Youthful Nightlife and Shopping Area
  • Insadong – Best Area for History and Culture
  • Itaewon – Seoul’s Most International Neighborhood
  • Sinchon – Affordable Base Near Hongdae
  • Gangnam – Seoul’s Upscale and Modern District

1. Myeongdong: Best Overall Area for a Central Base

Myeongdong is the sweet spot for most Seoul visitors as its central, convenient, and packed with everything you need.

I often choose to stay here when I’m catching an early train to Busan the next day, due to its close proximity to Seoul Station.

Why stay in Myeongdong:

  • Excellent subway connections to explore the rest of Seoul

  • Walking distance to Namsan Tower, Gyeongbokgung Palace, and Dongdaemun Design Plaza
  • Amazing street food scene day and night
  • Shopping paradise with everything from global brands to K-beauty products

Things to keep in mind:

  • It gets very busy, especially on weekends and evenings
  • Noise can be an issue depending on where your hotel sits. Check reviews before booking
  • Beauty store staff can be pushy on the street
  • If you’re looking for historic culture, you won’t find it here, although the street food scene and local shopping are very much their own kind of Seoul culture

I’ve seen Cookin’ Nanta more times than I can count and I still love it.

It’s a hilarious non-verbal comedy show combining cooking, percussion and pure entertainment, and it’s just as fun the fifth time as the first.

2. Hongdae: Seoul’s Youthful Nightlife and Shopping Area

Built around Hongik University, this neighborhood attracts artists, students, and anyone seeking Seoul’s most vibrant nightlife.

When my sister and niece visited Seoul, they chose to stay in Hongdae, and I joined them for a few nights.

Street buskers perform for crowds, and the area buzzes with activity well into the night.

By day, it’s indie boutiques and quirky cafés.

Why stay in Hongdae:

  • Young, international crowd with great energy
  • Seoul’s premier nightlife district with countless bars and clubs
  • Live street performances and busking shows every evening
  • Unique boutique shopping and indie fashion stores
  • Trendy cafes and diverse food scene

Things to keep in mind:

  • Noise goes late into the night, and then the cleanup crews start early in the morning. Check exactly where your hotel sits before booking
  • Crowds on weekends can be overwhelming
  • If you’re deciding where to stay in Seoul and sightseeing is your main focus, Hongdae sits further from the historical sites on the eastern side of the city, like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Myeongdong

Where to book in Hongdae:

📍Hongdae StyleMid-range | Highly rated, centrally located in the heart of Hongdae

📍Mercure Ambassador Seoul HongdaeMid-range | Stylish hotel with modern amenities

3. Insadong (Jongno District): Seoul’s Historic and Cultural Heart

Insadong has a historic charm that’s easy to adore.

Nearby Bukchon Hanok Village is lined with traditional hanok houses, so just walking the streets of either area feels like stepping back in time.

I fell in love with Insadong all over again on my last visit. I found a beautiful cafe to visit and just really enjoyed strolling around the area.

Why stay in Jongno:

  • Home to major attractions like Gyeongbokgung Palace and Bukchon Hanok Village
  • Walking distance to Insadong’s traditional art galleries and tea houses
  • Authentic Korean food scene, from hanok restaurants to Gwangjang Market
  • Perfect blend of historical sites and modern conveniences
  • Excellent subway connections throughout the city

Things to keep in mind:

  • Crowds at peak tourist times around the palaces and Bukchon can be intense, and if you’re visiting in May, the Lotus Lantern Festival brings street closures, big crowds and rerouted buses on top of that.
  • The traditional areas like Bukchon involve steep hills, so factor that in if walking is a concern
  • Some areas near the pocha zones can get noisy at night

Where to book in Jongno:

4. Itaewon: Seoul’s International Neighborhood

Itaewon is Seoul’s most international neighborhood.

It might not be the most convenient base for sightseeing, but staying in Seoul’s diverse area offers a genuinely different experience from anywhere else in the city.

This is where locals go when they want international cuisine and where expats gather to feel at home.

One of my most memorable experiences in Seoul was in here 2019.

I stumbled into a live art show with hip-hop music and ended up making some incredible friends that evening.

Why stay in Itaewon:

  • Seoul’s most diverse food scene with cuisines from around the world
  • International atmosphere with English-speaking establishments
  • Vibrant nightlife scene with a variety of bars and clubs
  • Popular with both locals and foreigners
  • Easy access to other parts of Seoul via subway and bus

Things to keep in mind:

  • The area is hilly, and walking to and from the room can be exhausting, let alone hauling luggage up steep back streets
  • Most of Seoul’s historical sites and palaces are further north, so factor in extra subway time
  • It gets loud on weekends, and the noise can go well into the early morning. I can confirm this from my own stays there
  • It’s not the place for traditional Korean cultural immersion

Where to book in Itaewon:

📍 G Guesthouse Itaewon In Seoul – HostelBudget | Hostel with both private rooms and dorm options, rooftop terrace and breakfast included

📍 Nouvelle Hotel Seoul Itaewon Mid-range | Modern hotel near the station with a breakfast buffet

📍 Grand Hyatt SeoulLuxury | Stunning city views, indoor pool, spa, and one of the few hotels in the area with an airport shuttle

5. Sinchon: Best Budget-Friendly Area

Sinchon offers the perfect combination of affordability and convenience.

As a university district, it caters to students and budget-conscious travelers without sacrificing access to Seoul’s main attractions.

A busy pedestrian street lined with shops and street food stalls in a local Seoul neighborhood on a sunny day.

Why stay in Sinchon:

  • Most affordable area with budget-friendly accommodation options
  • Youthful, energetic atmosphere thanks to nearby universities
  • Affordable dining options from street food to casual restaurants
  • Excellent subway connections to Hongdae, Myeongdong, and Itaewon
  • Less touristy but still convenient for exploring Seoul

Things to keep in mind:

  • Student nightlife means noise and crowds, especially in the evenings
  • Accommodation options are more limited here and rooms tend to be smaller
  • It’s slightly removed from Seoul’s major historical sites and cultural landmarks

Where to book in Sinchon:

📍 YH GuestHouse – HostelBudget | Friendly staff, good location and easy access to public transportation

📍 Wegoinn HostelMid-range | Highly rated, free Wi-Fi, bar and lounge, and one of the few places in the area with on-site parking

6. Gangnam: Seoul’s Upscale and Modern District

Yes, this is the Gangnam from “Gangnam Style”!

If you’re choosing where to stay in Seoul and want the most modern, upscale side of the city, this is it.

It’s also the area I visited the most often when I lived here. Now it draws me back to stay when I visit.

The Gangna, Style sign

While it has a reputation as purely modern and commercial, Bongeunsa Temple and the Joseon Royal Tombs at Seonjeongneung are both here if you want a quieter cultural detour.

There are also some BTS and other K-Pop stops in and around Gangnam you might want to visit

Why stay in Gangnam:

  •  Seoul’s most luxurious shopping district with brands like Louis Vuitton and Chanel
  • High-end dining and sophisticated nightlife scene
  • Modern, clean area with wide boulevards and upscale atmosphere
  • Great for business travelers and those seeking luxury experiences
  • Excellent subway connections (Lines 2, 3, and 9)

Things to keep in mind:

  • It can be the most expensive area to stay in Seoul
  • Historical sites north of the Han River require extra subway time
  • Like most areas in the city, noise can be an issue depending on where your hotel sits,  bar crowds late at night, and cleanup crews early in the morning

FAQ

How do I choose the best area to stay in Seoul?

It depends on what you want from your trip. Myeongdong puts you in the center with easy access to most attractions. Hongdae has energy, nightlife, and shopping. Insadong in the Jongno district is where the historic sites and traditional culture are concentrated. Sinchon is the most affordable option, and Gangnam is modern and upscale yet well connected.

What’s the most central neighborhood in Seoul for tourists?

Myeongdong. It’s close to major attractions, street food markets, and subway lines. You can also walk to Seoul Station for day trips to Busan or beyond.

Is Myeongdong or Hongdae better to stay in Seoul?

They have very different vibes. Myeongdong is more central and better for sightseeing. Hongdae has a younger, more energetic atmosphere and a stronger nightlife scene, but is farther from the historical sites. It comes down to what matters most for your trip.

Where should I stay in Seoul on a budget?

Sinchon is the most affordable base, with hostels and small guesthouses close to good subway connections. Hongdae also has budget options and more to do in the evenings.

What’s the difference between staying in a hotel vs. a guesthouse in Seoul?

Hotels usually offer more privacy, have better amenities, and are easier for non-Korean speakers. Guesthouses are more budget-friendly with a social, homey vibe, which is good if you’re comfortable with shared spaces.

How far in advance should I book accommodation in Seoul?

For cherry blossom or fall foliage season, book 4–6 weeks ahead. For other times, 2–3 weeks is usually fine. Weekends in popular neighborhoods (like Hongdae or Myeongdong) book up quickly.
